Ms. Hammonds was in US Navy for four years, then the reserves for four years. During her military service, she served as an assistant to the Chaplain, traveled to Alaska, and received an award as Sailor of the Year.
Ms. Hammonds is the original owner of her home in the Forestwood subdivision in northwest Harris County, where she has lived for 21 years. Her son lives with her. Thanks to a grant from the Texas Veterans Commission, Rebuilding Together replaced her roof, installed a low-curb shower, repaired her old flooring, and replaced the siding of the home. A volunteer crew will paint and “seal the envelope” of the house.
