Our National Organization

Rebuilding Together’s work began in 1973 in Midland, Texas, when a small group of residents saw that many of their neighbors were living in unsafe homes and could not afford repairs. They stepped in to help, volunteering their time to make the critical fixes those families needed. That effort became Christmas in April, a community project focused on repairing homes each April.

As more people learned about the impact of this work, the idea grew. What started as an annual event became a year-round effort to bring partners together to help neighbors stay safe in their homes. In 1988, the national office was established, and the organization became Rebuilding Together.

Today, Rebuilding Together is a national leader in safe and healthy housing. Across the country, affiliates like Rebuilding Together Houston work hand-in-hand with long-term residents, community leaders, funders, and volunteers to reduce health and safety hazards, preserve affordable homeownership, and strengthen the fabric of our neighborhoods. Together, we continue the work that began in Midland: making homes safer, communities stronger, and ensuring everyone has the opportunity to thrive in place.
