Third Ward Community Revitalization

No Houston neighborhood has more families at risk of losing their homes than the historic Third Ward.  Low-income homeowners in Houston struggle to repair their aging homes so they can remain in their neighborhoods and eventually pass their valuable house to the next generation.

Rebuilding Together Houston is working to bring hope to families across the Third Ward, a landmark African American community since the 1870s.

“This new initiative is bringing our mission -- Repairing Homes, Revitalizing Communities, and Rebuilding Lives -- to Third Ward,” said Rebuilding Together Houston’s CEO Christine Holland. “There are so many families that want to stay in the neighborhood they helped build, want to repair their home, want to pass it to their kids or grandkids, but they need our help.”

In November of 2022, Rebuilding Together Houston completed repairs on the home of Ms. Mary Banks. She’s the widow of a legend, the “Honorary Mayor of Third Ward” Ed Banks. He earned that name for his years of community service, including a successful home repair program. It was time to pay back that service.

Rebuilding Together Houston brought in contractors to make critical licensed repairs: replacing the roof, stabilizing the structure and repairing plumbing. Staff made safety modifications and installing equipment to prevent slips and falls, respond to possible fires and improve air quality. As a part of the Third Ward Showcase in 2022, HP provided volunteers to make exterior repairs and donated HP products to the Banks home.
