Why Control Pests?

We share our world with a variety of insects, spiders and rodents. While some help us — bees pollinate plants; spiders eat insects — many pests can cause discomfort, disease, or damage to our property.

Responding to pests with harsh chemicals can be effective, but those chemicals may be harmful to you, your family, or pets. Simple prevention and treatments may be all you need to stay safe and healthy in your home.

Here are six tips to get you started now.

#1 Cockroaches. Place a mixture of equal parts boric acid and sugar in damp areas under sinks, toilets, and appliances.

#2 Fruit flies. Place a bowl or glass of beer, vinegar or fruit, with a few drops of dish soap, in kitchen. Keep sink drains clean. Place sprigs of fresh basil in kitchen.

#3 Mice. Fill holes and cracks outside your home with steel wool; mice can chew through sealant.

#4 Ants. Fill entry holes or cracks with caulk. Clean all crumbs and spills.

#5 Termites. Keep outside plants away from home. Regularly inspect foundation for signs of activity.

#6 Bed Bugs. Wash bedding regularly. Cover mattress and box spring with bug-proof bags. Treat area with diatomaceous earth and boric acid.

 

Additional Tips

  • Treating the home with diatomaceous earth can help control many pests like fleas and ticks.
