Why Accessibility?
In 2019, over 1 million Houstonians were ages 35 - 64 or the retirement age of 65+. That means that almost half of our city's population may need to make modifications to their home, or to their parents' home, in order to make it safe as they age.
AARP is the author of the HomeFit Guide, all new for 2020, featuring simple do-it-yourself fixes to turn your home into a lifelong home. En español.
Here are six tips to get you started now.
#1 Entrances and Exits - address tripping hazards with thereshold ramps and grab bars. Add lower peepholes such as wheelchair-level. Put a bench near entrances to place packages while locking or unlocking a door.
#2 Kitchen - D-shaped cabinet handles are easier to grasp than knobs. Make appliances and cookware easy to reach on counters or shelves. Ensure spaces to sit while preparing meals, such as folding tables.
#3 Bathroom - install a hand-held or adjustable showerhead. Install grab bars or use clamp-on bars in the shower or tub, and near the toilet. Toilet safety frames can be attached directly to the toilet.
#4 Stairs - install handrails on both sides of the stairs. Make sure that stairs are free of clutter. If the stairs are not carpeted, install non-slip surfaces such as adhesive strips.
#5 Doorways - swing-clear hinges add 2 inches of clearance for walkers and wheelchairs. Place threshold ramps at doorways where needed.
