Bring the joy of a safe home to a family in need

Maria Sendejo and her family have been beaming for weeks since her home was finally restored to a livable condition. It took the efforts of the entire community coming together to provide both physical and financial contributions to fortify her home so that it may protect and nurture her family for generations.

I was surprised and shocked when so many people showed up, to me it means a lot. Because it’s a lot of love — and that’s what counts.
— Maria Sendejo

Three generations of Ms. Sendejo’s family have lived in their small, one-story home in Houston’s East End over the span of 90 years. Her father originally bought the house, and it was there that she grew up, helped raise her 12 siblings, welcomed children and grandchildren of her own, cared for her ailing parents, and unhesitatingly offered a safe and loving space to anyone in her community who showed up at her door.

Over the years, wear and tear on the home contributed to hazardous conditions, including an unstable foundation, rotting siding, faulty electrical and plumbing systems, broken windows, and gaps in the flooring.

At 76 years of age, Ms. Sendejo currently uses a walker to safely navigate around her home, but that hasn’t stopped her from continuing to help others. “There’s nothing but love in this house,” She states emphatically.

When Rebuilding Together Houston (RTH) found out about the condition of Ms. Sendejo’s home, our organization rallied together community support, including professional contractors, corporate sponsors, staff and volunteers, in addition to 20 members of Ms. Sendejo’s own family driving from as far as Oklahoma, to repair Maria’s home so that it will last at least another 20 years.

Right now, more than 100,000 Harris County residents are living in unsafe housing conditions, waiting and hoping for the life changing call that their home will be next in line for help.

They continue to live with hazardous conditions, like leaky roofs, failing electrical systems, and broken water heaters — repairs which are entirely preventable and can be fixed RIGHT NOW — with your help.

Your contribution, at any level, will help strengthen homes so that they are able to withstand future natural disasters, making a world of difference to homeowners whose homes are the centerpiece of their families.
