Rebuilding Together Houston Encourages Preparedness During Hurricane Season
Everyone is Encouraged to Download Flood and Hurricane Guides
Rebuilding Together Houston (RTH) encourages individuals, families, and communities to prepare for the Atlantic Hurricane Season. To assist, RTH has two guides to protect families and their homes, which for many is a family’s most important asset.
The guides for floods and hurricanes encourages homeowners to learn about natural disaster risks in their community, consider a plan for sheltering in place or evacuating, creating a disaster preparedness box, and determining how the family will reconnect if separated.

The free community guide highlights step-by-step instructions about what to do prior to, during, and after a hurricane. Here are some important points:
Before the Hurricane
Elevate your furnace, water heat, and/or other appliances that are part of the whole-home system to prevent water damage and help you recover faster.
Install check valves at key points in your plumbing to prevent floodwater from backing up into drains.
Remove dead or damaged limbs from trees
During the Hurricane
Use sandbags during a flood to divert water from doors.
Unplug electrical equipment.
After the Hurricane
Let your friends and family know you are safe through the Red Cross smartphone application and follow your family emergency plan.
Return to your home only when authorities say it is safe to do so.
Check for any structural damage before you enter your home.

According to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, ever since 1995 the Atlantic region has experienced a high activity generating patterns of sea surface temperature and wind that are conducive to the formation of damaging storms.
It is uncertain how many severe storms – if any – will make landfall in our area, but if one does arrive the risk of wind and water damage will be high.
