HOt Topics imageMarch 5, 2016 – Nearly 140 volunteers -- military veterans, college students, corporate volunteers from AIG and Boy Scouts -- joined the 2016 NCAA Men’s Final Four Local Organizing Committee for a Day of Service. The day was designed to create a legacy that extended well beyond the championship weekend.

Volunteers worked with two organizations -- Keep Houston Beautiful to plant trees and create gardens for a community center and Rebuilding Together Houston to repair the homes of three homeowners on the same street in the Sunnyside area. One home suffered damage when a neighbor’s house caught fire. The home is owned by a military veteran currently enrolled in school, who lacked the funds to make repairs. Another home is owned by an 87-year-old widow, who has lived in the home since 1954. A native Houstonian who raised six children in the home, she wants to continue hosting her 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren at holiday gatherings. An 89-year- old widow, who recently lost her World War II veteran husband, was the third recipient of our services. She has lived in the home for 60-plus years and has served as a teaching assistant in nearly every school in the neighborhood. After receiving help from the Final Four volunteers, she will enjoy the home even more now with her seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
